Fer & Vent Climb forecast · Paris
About

About the project

Fer & Vent is a small, non-commercial climb-forecast journal maintained in Paris by two amateur weather watchers. We started it in 2019 after one too many hazy climbs ruined by a forecast we had not quite read right. The site has grown slowly since.

The two of us

We are a couple in our thirties living in the 15th arrondissement, about twenty minutes' walk from the base of the tower. One of us works in software; the other teaches history in a lycée. Neither of us is a professional meteorologist. We read bulletins. We walk to the Trocadéro at sunset. We write up what we see.

What we publish

Three things, in order of priority:

  1. A daily note. A short reading of the expected visibility and wind at summit level, updated three times a day.
  2. Notes on the physics of visibility. Why the view is bad on some days, why it is good on others. We find these endlessly interesting and hope you will too.
  3. A visit planning page. Which day of your trip to climb, which hour of the day, what to wear, what to do if the forecast is unanimous poor.

What we do not publish

  • Ticket sales. We are not resellers. All tickets should be bought on the official SETE site at toureiffel.paris.
  • Operational forecasts. We are not qualified to publish forecasts for navigation, aviation or any professional use.
  • Advertising. The site has no sponsorship and no referral links.

Why Fer & Vent

The site's name is a two-word summary of the two things that most affect a climb: the iron the tower is made of, and the wind at the top. "Fer" is French for iron; "vent" is wind. We also like that it sounds like the title of a bad adventure novel.

Costs and funding

Hosting costs us about twelve euros a month. We pay for it ourselves. The site has no commercial affiliation.
