Our three favourite slots
- Forty-five minutes before sunset — catches the whole arc of golden hour, sunset, and blue hour on a single climb. The best photographic hour of the day.
- First morning slot — around 09:00. The queue is at its shortest, the deck is quiet, and the view (especially from the east face) is at its sharpest.
- Mid-afternoon in winter — around 14:30 in December, 15:30 in February. The crowds are at a daily minimum because many visitors have already peaked; sunset at 17:00 means a short wait for the magic hour.
By day of the week
- Tuesday and Wednesday are the quietest days. Monday is also quiet but some surrounding museums (Louvre on Tuesday) are closed, which can concentrate visitors.
- Thursday to Sunday are the busier days, with Saturday afternoon the busiest slot of the week in all seasons.
- School holidays, French public holidays, long weekends and the week between Christmas and New Year's day are peak-busy. If your travel date is one of these, consider the first morning slot or the last evening slot.
By season
- Winter — short daylight means the magic hour can be fit into a short visit. Prefer late afternoon.
- Spring — variable; follow the forecast more than the clock.
- Summer — long daylight means a sunset climb can keep you out late. Prefer sunrise if you dislike crowds; sunset if you want the postcard.
- Autumn — our favourite season. The clearest cold-front days of the year happen between early October and mid-November.
Avoid
- Noon to 14:00 in any season — flat light, longest queue.
- A rainy winter afternoon with sustained wind over 60 km/h — the summit platform may be closed, and the view through the rain window is limited.
- A Saharan dust day — the view is a quiet orange grey; it is interesting once but not what most visitors come for.
How this ties to our forecast
Our daily note publishes the visibility forecast at summit level for the day and tells you whether we expect the summit platform to stay open. If the forecast is unanimous (several days of clear, calm weather), book early. If it is marginal, consider postponing by one day — in our experience, a one-day shift is often enough to find a better window.
